The Torch

The Torch is Waldorf University’s student-run magazine. The magazine is published twice a semester and chronicles the events, activities and campus life at the university. In this practicum students learn valuable writing, editing and design skills.

Founded in 2009, The Torch replaced the student yearbook. With yearbooks losing their popularity among the college students (due to increase in social media), the Communications department sought a new way to engage students in practical application of publication writing and design. The Torch magazine was thus born.

The Torch reports on university activities, student life, fine arts, athletics and Forest City community events. In the process of developing these stories, students are engaged in practical application of the skills they are learning in their other Communications classes; they learn how to properly conduct interviews, fine-tune their writing skills, take captivating photographs and design visually appealing layouts.

Students participate in weekly meetings, where the staff or students are trained and supervised by their student leaders. The Torch currently operates with a student editor-in-chief and a student design editor. These student leaders help the staff in story idea development, edit the stories and layout once they are written and designed and prepare the publication for professional printing.

The key component of The Torch magazine is that students are writing about topics they are passionate about and have their work published in a printed magazine. These publications make valuable portfolio pieces for students as they begin the process of interviewing for jobs after graduation.
